From South Bend to St. Andrews, we documented the journey of the Notre Dame men’s and women’s golf teams as they participated in the inaugural St. Andrews Collegiate. This historic event marked the first time that four prestigious American universities, including Notre Dame, were invited to compete at the renowned St. Andrews Links.
A Storied Legacy
Notre Dame, known as one of the most storied universities and sports programs in the world, was selected to participate in this prestigious tournament. The Fighting Irish faced tough competition from other esteemed academic schools and decorated golf programs such as Vanderbilt, North Carolina, and Georgetown.
“For the inaugural event, we wanted to make sure we had some great schools coming,” said Laurie Watson, Director of Engagement for St. Andrews Links. “A school like Notre Dame is renowned across the world. A historic university at the Home of Golf? It doesn’t get any better than that.”
The Notre Dame Way
Notre Dame’s campus exudes a sense of historical significance, from iconic landmarks like the Golden Dome and Touchdown Jesus to the peaceful Grotto. The university’s rich legacy extends beyond academics and athletics, and it is a symbol recognized worldwide.
“The most important thing we do is make sure we find student-athletes with the right fit for Notre Dame. That means someone who is not only a great player for our program but also someone who will uphold the values and traditions of Notre Dame,” said John Handrigan, Notre Dame’s Director of Golf and Men’s Head Coach.
Under Coach Handrigan’s leadership, the Irish golf program has reached new heights, with the men’s team achieving their highest number of victories in a season, earning a Top 20 national ranking, and producing players who have gone on to play professionally.
A Strong Foundation
The Notre Dame golf teams boast talented players who form a strong foundation for both current and future success. Led by co-captains Palmer Jackson and Angelo Marcon, the men’s team also features standout players such as Nate Stevens and promising freshmen Jacob Modleski, Rocco Salvitti, and Christopher Bagnall.
On the women’s team, newly appointed head coach Caroline Powers Ellis brings a wealth of experience in developing championship winners and All-American talent. She is supported by assistant coach Kari Bellville, a former Notre Dame golfer who adds valuable insight to the team. Key players on the women’s team include senior Chloe Schiavone, graduate student Lauren Beaudreau, and a group of talented freshmen including Anna Heck, Mimi Burton, and Alexsandra Lapple.
A Memorable Journey
The St. Andrews Collegiate provided an opportunity for the Notre Dame golf teams to experience the Scottish golfing heritage and create lifelong memories. Alongside their teammates, the student-athletes were accompanied by their families, creating a truly unique and special Notre Dame family experience.
During their time in Scotland, the men’s and women’s teams embraced the challenging weather conditions, including cold temperatures, wind, and rain. They had the chance to deepen their bond by playing with each other in a way rarely done back home.
Over the course of three days, the four competing teams played two rounds of stroke play on the prestigious Jubilee Course, one of the top 100 courses in the UK and Ireland, to determine the seeding for the final day on the legendary Old Course. Although Notre Dame faced tough competition, they displayed their grit and determination, ultimately emerging as the champions.
A Bright Future
The St. Andrews Collegiate served as a valuable test for the Notre Dame golf program against some of the best college golfers in the world. While they displayed their ability to compete at a high level, the experience also highlighted areas where improvement is needed.
“We showed that we can hang with the best, but just hanging with those teams isn’t good enough,” said Handrigan. “Our student-athletes don’t want it to be easy. Notre Dame is meant to challenge you academically and on the course. We expect more from ourselves and know what we need to do to beat the best in the country.”
As the journey at St. Andrews came to a close, it was a time of celebration and reflection for the Notre Dame, golf, and the families who had accompanied the student-athletes. This moment reminded everyone of the importance of family, a core value at Notre Dame.
“Having all the families here to celebrate this moment was surreal,” said Handrigan. “Having this experience as the Notre Dame family has been incredible. There’s nothing better than family.”
