Brave the Storm: Notre Dame Golf at the Old Course, St. Andrews

When it comes to teeing it up at St. Andrews and truly experiencing the essence of Scotland, one must be willing to brave the unpredictable and sometimes brutal weather. The Notre Dame men’s and women’s golf teams had the chance to do just that during the inaugural St. Andrews Links Collegiate.

Joining three other schools, Georgetown, North Carolina, and Vanderbilt, the Fighting Irish embarked on a journey unlike any other. GOLF had the privilege of documenting their experience in the captivating film, Beyond The Bend.

A Notre Dame Golfer tees off on the 18th hole on the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Upon their arrival, it was clear that they were up for a true Scottish challenge. The weather was brisk, cold, and wet, as one would expect in late October in Fife. However, this storm was far more brutal than anticipated.

“It literally cannot get worse,” remarked senior Chloe Schiavone, “I feel like if every course in Scotland shut down, it’s gotta be bad.”

Despite the challenging conditions, the teams wasted no time in preparing for the upcoming tournament. This practice was of utmost importance, considering that very few team members had ever played links golf before.

With beanies, hand warmers, puffy jackets, and vests providing some relief from the elements, the squads hit the range and ventured out for their first practice rounds.

“They said that Scotland was going to be cold and windy, but not this cold and windy,” exclaimed senior men’s captain Angelo Marcon. “The courses are all closed, and they never close in Scotland. Never! This is pretty crazy. I’ve been through a lot of wind, but not this crazy.”

The tournament’s initial two rounds were played on the Jubilee Course, with the final round slated to take place on the renowned Old Course.

“When the conditions get as extreme as they were, you really learn the essence of what links golf is,” emphasized associate head coach Zac Zedrick. “It’s all about the angles, especially on the Old Course.”
