We are excited to share the latest news from the USGA regarding the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. The USGA has recently released a list of host courses for the local and final qualifiers, providing golf enthusiasts with the opportunity to compete in this prestigious championship.
The U.S. Open is known for its rich history and challenging courses, and Pinehurst No. 2 is no exception. As one of the most revered layouts in golf, Pinehurst will be hosting the national championship for the fourth time in 2024. With the previous record of 10,127 entries for the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, there is a good chance that this year’s event may surpass that number and create new records.
To earn a spot in the 2024 U.S. Open, players will first need to participate in the local qualifiers. These qualifiers will take place at 109 sites across 44 U.S. states and Canada from April 22 to May 20. Competitors will showcase their skills over 18 holes, hoping to advance to the final qualifying stage.
The final qualifying, also known as sectionals, will be held at 13 global sites, including England, Japan, Canada, and 10 locations in the U.S. Those who make it to this stage will face the challenge of playing 36 holes. The final qualifying rounds will take place on either May 20th or June 3rd, depending on the site.
For those who are interested in testing their abilities and aiming for a chance to qualify for the U.S. Open, online player registration will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at champs.usga.org. However, it is important to note that players must have a handicap index not exceeding 0.4 or be a professional to be eligible for registration.
While it may seem unlikely for a qualifier to win the U.S. Open, history has shown otherwise. Names like Ken Venturi and Orville Moody began their journey to U.S. Open glory through local qualifiers. Even Lucas Glover, the 2009 U.S. Open champion, advanced through the sectionals to lift the trophy. So, if you have the skills and determination, you may have what it takes to make your mark in U.S. Open history.
