The onset of the pandemic in 2020 provided Isaiah with the perfect opportunity to launch the Afriyea Golf Academy.
With the help of Stephen Kasaija, a former coach of the Ugandan National golf team, Isaiah organized a free golf clinic that attracted 30 boys and girls. The clinic not only taught golf skills but also emphasized life skills and environmental sustainability. Isaiah’s holistic approach struck a chord with the participants.
The success of the clinic spurred Isaiah to establish the Afriyea Golf Academy as a formal program. Today, the academy boasts 13 instructors and serves over 1,000 children across 31 schools in western Uganda. Despite the challenges faced by Isaiah and his academy, the impact they have made on disadvantaged children in Uganda is undeniable. Alex Ruhunda, a member of Uganda’s parliament, acknowledges the positive influence sports, particularly golf, can have in opening up opportunities for young individuals.
The success of the Afriyea Golf Academy has sparked discussions about expanding Toro Golf Club to 18 holes to accommodate the growing interest in the sport. While golf is still a niche activity in Uganda, the gradual progress being made, including achievements such as Roger Rugumayo becoming the first Ugandan to make a cut in a DP World Tour event, highlights the potential for growth.
